Hilary is an Associate in BTO’s Corporate team in Glasgow, and has experience in advising clients from small owner managed businesses to larger companies on a wide range of corporate matters.

She advises clients on commercial matters including mergers and acquisitions, commercial contracts, private equity investments and general corporate governance issues.

Hilary served a year’s secondment to Scottish Enterprise, working in the SE Transaction Team.  She also tutors post-graduate students at the University of Strathclyde in the Company Law elective.

A Rising star Private Client solicitor who recently completed her traineeship in a two-year specialist private client seat, Shelley specialises in the administration of Estates, Wills and Power of Attorneys. Shelley completed her legal studies at Strathclyde University where she earned her Clinical LLB and Master’s degree. Prior to undertaking her legal studies, Shelley worked as a print and broadcast journalist for over a decade and had hundreds of articles published in the national press.

Duncan specialises in the representation of healthcare and other professionals before their professional regulators, in disciplinary proceedings and before the civil and criminal courts. An experienced advocate, he regularly represents doctors and dentists in fitness to practise proceedings, conducting professional disciplinary hearings before the General Medical Council and General Dental Council.

Duncan has also represented pharmacists before the General Pharmaceutical Council and accountants before the Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy and has prosecuted professional disciplinary proceedings against teachers and social workers.

Duncan has acted on the instructions of the three main medical defence organisations for over 17 years and has extensive experience of defending doctors and dentists in clinical negligence claims in the Court of Session and the Sheriff Courts, as well as in NHS investigations and disciplinary proceedings.

Marianne has over 20 years' experience of marketing and business development in the legal services industry. Her skill-set encompasses strategic marketing planning and implementation, integrating traditional and digital marketing campaigns; strong project management and analytical skills and well-developed communication skills.

She reports to BTO’s Chief Operating Officer and manages the firm’s day to day marketing activities, marketing communications, public relations, social media, brand management, events management, sponsorship initiatives and internal communications.

She also plays a key role in the European and Middle Eastern Marketing and BD Group of Mackrell International, a global legal network of firms in 60 countries worldwide.

Nicolas has specialised in licensing and commercial property work since qualifying.

He advises a number of commercial institutions, investors/developers, lending institutions, commercial owners and occupiers, as well as retail clients and charities. Nicolas receives plaudits for his "his "down-to-earth" style, his responsiveness, and his propensity to go above and beyond the expected level of client service" (Chambers UK).

He acts also for a variety of clients in the leisure and hospitality sector, advising on their commercial property and licensing issues, and is praised for his "Knowledge, speed and value for money" with clients commenting "He was happy to provide alternative solutions or to meet in person to discuss problems and issues." (Chambers UK).

Nicolas is involved daily in property purchases and sales, drafting and negotiating leases/general lease management for both landlord and tenant and the licensing aspects of commercial deals.

Andrew works as a Paralegal on the Debt Recovery team, based in the Glasgow office.

Andrew comes from a call centre background and have worked in multiple departments within Lloyds bank doing mortgage collections over the last 4 years.

Karen has worked in a legal environment for over 9 years. She now works in a busy team specialising in Commercial Debt Recovery for a range of BTO’s clients including advising on all aspects of diligence and civil enforcement. She further undertakes Heritable Court Actions for all of BTO’s Registered Social Landlord clients. 

Having enjoyed a successful career as an experienced insurance practitioner, since qualifying Mark has specialised in commercial real estate, acting in a wide range of transactions for institutional and overseas clients including retail and industrial portfolio acquisitions, disposals and refinancing, including being part of the small team completing the largest land deal in Scotland in 2014, to single property and lease management transactions.

Mark also acts for SMEs and individual investors in acquisitions, disposals, refinancing and leasing transactions (for both landlords and tenants) as well as acting for lenders and borrowers in development financing.

Lauren is an Associate admitted to practice in Scotland, England and Wales. She works within the firm’s intellectual property, data protection and dispute resolution teams and undertakes a variety of contentious and non-contentious work.

Lauren trained with BTO and subsequently spent several years with a global law firm, working in London and latterly Edinburgh. She has experience litigating in both the Scottish and English courts.  

Lauren works with a broad range of clients across the creative industries, with a particular interest in the publishing industry. She has a master’s degree in publishing and prior to qualifying as a lawyer, spent time working at Hearst Magazines in New York City. She has also completed a number of industry placements in the UK and so has a particular understanding of the business of publishing.

Lauren is a member of The British Literary and Artistic Copyright Association.

Jaimie joined BTO in 2018 and qualified as a Solicitor into the firm’s highly ranked Regulatory and Criminal Defence team in September 2020.

Since joining the team, Jaimie has assisted partners with the investigation and preparation of complex cases, including health & safety, corporate & financial crime, Fatal Accident Inquiries and regulatory prosecutions, across a wide range of industry sectors. Jaimie regularly appears in the Sheriff Court representing clients in criminal matters at both summary and solemn level. Jaimie was involved in a successful High Court Appeal and has represented clients in a Fatal Accident Inquiry.

Jaimie is also a Registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and practised in a variety of frontline NHS maternity services for 8 years, before joining the firm. This experience has provided her with a unique perspective on matters with a medical or healthcare component and an understanding of how health and safety operates in practice.

Jaimie has a particular interest in advising and representing medical professionals in criminal and regulatory matters and uses her previous experience to quickly develop an empathetic and supportive rapport with clients, some of whom face potentially career ending allegations.  

During her traineeship with BTO, Jaimie gained experience with the Professional Discipline & Clinical Defence team and the Property and Insurance Litigation teams.

Jaimie is a Notary Public and a member of the Health & Safety Lawyers' Association and the Scottish Young Lawyers’ Association.
