The Technology and IP team works in a range of business sectors including technology, energy and renewables, recruitment, engineering, drinks, retail, hospitality, social housing, the voluntary sector, local government and creative industries.
Our team specialises in providing pragmatic and effective advice on a wide range of intellectual property and technology matters. We pride ourselves on being able to offer both contentious and non-contentious support to our clients enabling us to offer a holistic service to our clients.
We regularly advise on copyright, trade mark and design matters including licensing, sale and purchase or rights, infringement, royalty disputes and commercialisation and exploitation of intellectual property.
The expertise within the team allows us to assist clients on projects from start to finish in drafting and revising contracts, commercialising work, completing deals and entering into partnerships and ensuring that they can protect and defend their rights, in court, if necessary.
We also offer UK trade mark registration and opposition services to our clients and often appear at Intellectual Property Office tribunal hearings.
We are regularly instructed to assist clients in development, licensing and sale of technology and software and the protection of their rights in this sphere including advising on joint ventures, working with third parties and putting in place non-disclosure agreements.
Paul Motion, Partner, who heads the versatile niche team, is a Solicitor Advocate and data protection specialist. He was board member and immediate past Chairman of the Scottish Society for Computers and Law until 2012. He chaired the Law Society of Scotland’s Technology Committee between 2000 and 2016.
Uniquely, Paul has since 2009 presented events on stage annually at the Edinburgh Fringe in relation to the legal issues of interest to the performing arts such as copyright, parody, legal issues relating to Twitter and cyber crime.
Lynn Richmond, Partner, is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in Intellectual Property and was a director of the Scottish Society for Computers and Law for over 10 years.
