Patents
Inventions can be extremely valuable and, where appropriate, they should be protected by a patent.
Not every good idea is patentable. For instance, patent applications for Perpetual Motion Machines are still banned. However, a blue squash ball (as opposed to a black one) did possess sufficient novelty and was judged an inventive step such as to make it patentable.
