Fatal Claims Update

A further fatal claim judgment has been handed down in the Court of Session this week. The case arose following the death of James Patrick Gallacher who died in 2009, aged 70, from mesothelioma. An action was raised by the deceased’s wife, four surviving children and seven grandchildren.

A new law on Forced Marriage becomes effective today, Monday 16th June. bto’s Associate John Fotheringham was interviewed by the BBC for the Scotland 2014 program, broadcast last Thursday, discussing the issues arising from this new law that criminalises forced marriage.
Proposed Exclusive Competence Threshold Amended to £100,000

The Scottish Government have agreed to an amendment to the Courts Reform Bill to reduce the new exclusive competence of the sheriff court from £150,000 to £100,000.
