18 November 2019
Putting to one side everything which is going on around us (whether beginning with a “B” or a “G” and an “E”), Scottish Enterprise’s ScotExport 2019 Conference on 12 November 2019 brought together panellists of experienced exporters with an audience keen to begin or build on the export businesses carried on by them.
There was a great energy throughout the day with a passion to show the world the quality of the Scottish brand.

For any business planning to export its goods or services, preparing their strategy for doing so is essential. This includes having regard to the manner of carrying out such business and the legal framework in which the business is to be operated. Having decided the strategy, it is necessary to consider the detail of how it can be implemented. Previous articles on this website have considered the mechanisms of distribution or agency for example in relation to the sale of goods. There are legal consequences attached to both, in particular agency under the Commercial Agents Regulations, where legal advice is necessary.
As part of the strategy, it is essential to ensure that your brand is protected and all of the intellectual property which goes with that.
These are only two aspects of the action plan which will develop as part of the strategy – as was said at the Conference, whilst it is necessary to ensure proper due diligence and good planning, the detail can be daunting but must not get in the way of a good strategy!
At BTO, we are well placed to advise you and, through our network of lawyers worldwide at Mackrell International, introduce you to lawyers around the world who can work with you and provide the required advice.
