The Government Equalities Office is seeking views on caste in Great Britain and the link with equality law.
The aim of the consultation is to ensure that there is appropriate and proportionate legal protection against unlawful discrimination because of a person’s origins, with due consideration given to how such protection would be implemented in practice.
The consultation sets out proposals for a case law approach or specific legislation outlawing discrimination on the basis of caste.
The consultation sets out the background for an understanding of caste in Great Britain, and invites views on what, if any, legislative exceptions may be necessary if legislation is considered necessary.
The Government Equalities Office wants to hear from employers, service providers and public authorities, as well as the wider public. The consultation closes on 18 July 2017.
