Parents and individuals who combine work with caring for dependents have some specific rights protected by law, including the right to request flexible working and take time off for dependents to deal with unforeseen circumstances.
On 24 March 2016, the House of Lords Select Committee published a report on the Equality Act 2010 and its impact on disabled people. The Committee had been asked to consider whether the Equality Act adequately tackles disability discrimination. It concluded that more needs to be done to remove the barriers that prevent disabled people from participating fully and equally in society.

One of the recommendations made was for more work to be done to encourage employers to respond positively to flexible working requests from carers of disabled people. On 7 July 2016, the government published it response, undertaking to evaluate the right for carers to request flexible working by April 2019, although stated that it believes that the right to request flexible working is currently working effectively. We await to hear what the government’s response will be.
