Music Sampling – What Is It?
Music sampling is a practice which involves artists digitally incorporating segments of existing sound recordings into new compositions. Some modern examples include Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’ of 2015 which sampled Timmy Thomas’ 1972 hit ‘Why Can’t We Live Together?' Another example comes from Beyoncé's 2011 ‘Run The World (Girls), which took large sections of Major Lazer’s 2009 track ‘Pon de Floor.'

During the August 2023 International Book Festival, Paul Motion and Lauren McFarlane from our creative industries team attended ‘From Page to Screen: Mayflies’, during which Andrew O’Hagan (author of Mayflies) discussed the adaptation of his book along with the screenwriter Andrea Gibb and executive producer of Synchronicity Films, Claire Mundell, who adapted the book into a two-part television drama starting Martin Compston and Tony Curran. This event offered an unusual – and enlightening – insight into the creative journey of adapting a book.
Section 3(1) of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (“the Act”) defines computer programs (and by extension, the program code therein) as “literary works” which are subject to copyright protection. This is the general starting point for computer program / software developers who should be live to the types of copyright that might subsist in their work (which could include the program code, graphical user interfaces, and databases).
