The Work and Pensions Committee has published a report on the support available for victims of modern slavery.
The report recommends that the new Government conducts an urgent review of the national response to modern slavery. It also recommends that minimum safeguards are introduced to protect victims in this area. There are a significant number of modern slavery victims in the UK, estimated at 13,000 victims. Support in the UK is ‘weak and uncoordinated’ with few formal systems in place to identify those affected and assist them. The report recommends that victims of modern slavery should be given at least one year's leave to remain in the UK alongside a personal plan for their recovery and that training on spotting signs of slavery and on how to deal with victims should be improved.
