Description:

Construction Contracts What’s new in 2017?

Recently we’ve seen refreshed editions of the JCT suite of contracts and a number of the SBCC standard forms being published. NEC4 has also been released. We will provide an overview of the new contracts and discuss the importance of keeping up with the changes.

Caroline Earnshaw, Associate

Unfit for work?

One of the most common issues for which our clients ask for assistance is ill health in the workplace. It is an area with many traps for the unwary.  We will look at the legal issues arising in relation to long and short term absence, ill health affecting performance, and the employer’s obligations towards disabled employees. We will also provide practical guidance on managing these issues and reducing the risk of claims.

Douglas Strang, Associate

Health & Safety Fines

BTO’s top tier Health & Safety and Regulatory Defence team will provide an update on developments in 2017, including the HSE’s Fee For Intervention regime and the implications of D Geddes (Construction) Ltd v Neil Johnston Health and Safety Services Ltd, which involves potential recoverability of health and safety fines from health and safety advisors if things go wrong.

Vicki Watt, Partner and Solicitor Advocate

GDPR Compliance – What does the construction industry need to know?

On 25 May 2018, the new General Data Protection Regulation will change the way in which organisations have to think about personal data.  This will affect how you process the data of customers, potential customers and employees. BTO’s Data Protection team will run through the significant changes coming your way in relation to consent; fair processing notices; marketing and data breaches...without mentioning the large fines that the regulator can impose if you get it wrong!
