“Cyber Insurance: Where next?”
Paul Motion, Partner & Solicitor Advocate
“Cyber” claims and the amounts of cover written are both increasing exponentially. Firewalls and other technical measures can reduce a business’s exposure to cyber-attacks, although criminals and hackers are always probing for new weaknesses. There is also a human facet to cyber security. A recent trend is the exploitation of human nature and trust, through so called “spear phishing”.
The motives for cyber-attacks are often, though not always, financial. The recent Ashley Madison hack was allegedly motivated by altruism in exposing that a $20 “Delete fee” was being charged by the website but personal data was not then deleted.
